In Season 4, Episode 4 of HOKA ONE ONE Top Trails, we visit Chattanooga, TN. Chattanooga earns its nickname as the “Scenic City” surrounded by mountains and ridges, with 54 trailheads within 20 minutes of downtown.
David Pharr (Fleet Feet Chattanooga) takes us on a run on Lookout Mountain from Craven’s House to Point Park. The area provides epic views overlooking the city and a palpable sense of civil war era history. Pharr discusses why he decided to start running. He was around 315 pounds and hoping to lose weight in order to better enjoy spending time with his daughter. In December of 2009 he decided to start a running streak to try to stay consistent with weight loss. At the time of filming, Pharr had run for 3,167 days in a row and lost about 100 pounds.
Randy Wharton (Director of Wild Trails) discusses how he believes Chattanooga is the best trail running city in America, but that it provides several challenges in trail maintenance. He and his wife founded the Wild Trails nonprofit organization, which hosts trail races and stand-up paddle board races throughout the year, in order to raise funds for tail maintenance. Wharton discusses his trail running philosophy and how there’s no reason anyone should stop being physically active later in life.
